What are mercury-free white fillings?

White fillings are made of composite resin- they are mercury and metal free. Composite resin is the modern, safe choice for restoring decayed teeth, and for replacement of old corroded silver fillings.
 
Advantages of white fillings:

1. Composite fillings integrate with the tooth- they actually bond to the tooth to make it stronger. Research shows after a composite filling, the tooth is 85% the strength of the tooth before it had any fillings at all.
2. Appearance wise,  they look more natural and attractive.
3. They insulate the tooth from temperature changes.  Silver fillings conduct hot and cold and can cause pain.
4. There is less drilling with tooth colored fillings.  More of your own tooth is left.
5. Composite fillings are mercury and metal free.  
    

Why replace silver mercury fillings?

1. The biggest problem with the silver amalgam, is the 50% mercury used in its fabrication.  Mercury is a toxic substance, implicated in over 30 diseases including Altheimers, Asthma, Depression, Arthritis, and Sleep Disorders.
2. Several countries including Canada, Norway, Germany, Denmark, and others have advised dentists against using mercury fillings in pregnant worman.  Our own Food and Drug Administration indicates that the mercury in dental amalgams may have neurotoxic effects on the nervous systems of developing children and fetuses.
3. Current research shows that mercury vapor can be released when a person chews his food, or even when a person clenches or grinds their teeth. This is very common- as much as 60% of the population does this inadvertently either during the daytime or at night.
    

Current Thinking

Researchers at the University of Rochester School of Medicine have shown "mercury vapor targets the central nervous system, the kidneys, and the stomach."  It has been shown that the concentration of mercury in the nervous system, the blood, and urine can correlate with the number of amalgam fillings a person has in their mouth.
 
Our position

It is inevitable that the US Food and Drug Administration will eventually ban the use of mercury because of its toxicity. Its only a matter of time. As your old silver filling deteriorate or decay, we recommend replacing them with beautiful composite bondings.
