What does Periodontal Disease look like? 

With gum disease often the gums are red and inflamed with a "gingivitis."	The problem is often generalized throughout the whole mouth and the gums will bleed with toothbrushing.

With Periodontal Disease the gums may NOT be red and inflamed.  There are other signs to look for.
   

Look for receded gums and spaces between the teeth as another sign of gum disease.	Often the the teeth appear longer and the roots of teeth are visible.

There may be underlining things that contribute to Periodontal Disease:

1-Some medical problems often contribute to the problem.
2-Hormonal changes in both males and females need to be considered.
3-Medications that you may be taking can cause gingivitis- a first sign of gum disease.
5-Your diet- especially foods with lots of sugar can make your gingivitis worse.  
6-Smoking and other harmful habits chronically irritate your gums.
